Local briefs: Ineligible player costs Hillsdale three PAL wins
The Hillsdale softball team forfeited three league wins because of the use of an ineligible player, the Peninsula Athletic League announced. The games were to El Camino, Burlingame and Mills. The player, who was ineligible because of grades, has brought the grades up and is now eligibile.The forfeits leave the Knights 3-9 in the PAL Bay Division, dropping them from fifth place to a tie for sixth with Mills.
Coach Pete Handy's Hillsdale team finishes its season with three games next week: Tuesday at home against Capuchino at 4 p.m., Thursday at home against Aragon at 4 p.m. and Friday with a 7 p.m. start against Aragon at Chanteloup Field.
Kentucky Derby simulcast today at Bay Meadows
Bay Meadows Race Track in San Mateo will open at 7:30 a.m. today for fans who want to watch and bet on the 12-race Kentucky Derby card from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Post time for the first race at Churchill is 8 a.m. Post time for the 134th Kentucky Derby is 3:04 p.m. Bay Meadows will present a nine-race card today. Post time for the first local race is 12:15 p.m.
Bay Meadows will help fans get into the Derby spirit by offering mint juleps at bars throughout the facility. Official Kentucky Derby souvenirs such as T-shirts and mint julep glasses will be available at the track's gift shop.
National rugby championships today at Stanford
The Stanford women and the Cal men will play for national collegiate rugby championships today at Steuber Stadium on the campus of Stanford University.
The Cardinal advanced Friday with a 40-20 victory over Navy. Stanford, led by former Palo Alto High School basketball player Jossy Tseng, will play Penn State at 3 p.m. today.
Cal topped St. Mary's 41-31 in a semifinal Friday. The Bears will meet Brigham Young at 5 p.m. in pursuit of their 17th national title in 18 years.
