For San Carlos, win comes with reward

Thirteen singles, one double and a great batting-eye - that's what San Carlos needed to defeat Half Moon Bay in Saturday's opening round of the District 52 Majors Super Bowl Tournament.

There was a reward awaiting the team after the win, too.

"Well, the perfect combo is playing and then going to the pool," San Carlos first baseman Jerod Woo said.

The 16-3 final score was methodical, to say the least. Half Moon Bay surrendered just one walk in a scoreless first inning, as Woo reached base for the first time. A Graham Stratford bunt single sparked a two-run rally for San Carlos in the top of the second, but Half Moon Bay answered in its half of the frame on a Dominic Penerelli RBI single and ensuing double steal.

Then came the top of the third - eight runs on six singles and five walks. San Carlos starting pitcher Matt Brotherton, who struck out five in two innings of work, got things started by driving in two with a hit. The rest of the runs were scored with two outs, including a bases-loaded walk from Woo.

Half Moon Bay responded with a solo home run from Aaron Dunbar, but that only cut the deficit to 10-3.

Five more runs in the top of the fourth put the mercy rule into effect, and Woo moved to the mound to pick up the last three outs in quick fashion.

Woo, along with teammates Patrick Philpott, Garrett Yamane and Stratford, collected a pair of singles. San Carlos catcher Jaden Briesach got his two singles, as well as a double and a game-high three RBIs.

"We're just trying to have a lot of fun," Woo said. "Win some games, maybe."

San Carlos next plays San Mateo National, the tournament's host, today at noon in the South Field at Lakeshore Park.
