Ex-Don Christian joins Yankees

Speedy outfielder, 28, called up from Triple-A

Outfielder Justin Christian, a 28-year-old former standout at Aragon High School in San Mateo and Skyline College in San Bruno, has been called up from Triple-A by the New York Yankees. That's quite a promotion for a guy who began the season as the fourth outfielder at Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre (Pa.).

The Yankees signed Christian to a minor league deal in 2004 after two seasons with the River City Rascals of the independent Frontier League. He was converted from second base to the outfield and drew attention with his game-changing speed, which allowed him to break the Doubl-A Trenton single-season stolen base record before the all-star break in 2006.

Christian was hitting .381 for the month in Triple-A. His season average was above .300 and he had 18 steals and 36 RBIs through 53 games.

NDNU signs 3 recruits

The Notre Dame de Namur men's basketball program has signed three recruits: guards Bennie Murray and Cheynne Lishman along with forward Trent Henwood.

The 6-4 Murray, who is from Wood High in Fairfield, where he led the Wildcats to a 24-5 record last season while scoring 15.9 points per game. He was twice named an all-league and was the league MVP as a sophomore.

Lishman is 6-2 and from Kailua, Hawaii. He was named all-state twice and is a two-time all-league performer. He was the Oahu player of the year this season after scoring 18 points per game.

Henwood, a 6-6 forward from West Campus High in Sacramento, is a two-time all-league player who averaged 13.3 points and 9.2 rebounds last season while being named his team's MVP.

The Argos finished the 2007-08 season with a 10-16 record and tied for fifth in the conference.

Tribe cruises by Dublin

In 19-and-under American Legion baseball action Tuesday, San Carlos beat Dublin 10-2 in a windy evening game at Valley Christian High School in Dublin.

Pitcher Adam Costello started and got the win, improving to 3-2. He worked seven innings, allowing six hits and one earned run. He struck out four and walked four.

The Tribe got a two-run home run from Jeff Keller in the eighth inning. It was his fourth round-tripper of the season.

Kyle Leong tripled to drive in two runs in the second inning for San Carlos, which got doubles from Brad Sentman, Costello and Keller.

Leong and Richie Fanti each had three RBIs for San Carlos.

Four members of the Tribe had two hits: Keller, Leong, Fanti and Jonathan Fukuhara.

The Tribe improved to 9-8 and will meet the San Mateo White Sox on Thursday at Carlmont High School at 5:30 p.m.
