Scorpions finish 2nd at Tahoe
The Foster City Scorpions, a traveling Class A 14-Under fast pitch softball team, went 5-1 and finished in second place at the 10-team 2008 Lake Tahoe ASA Tournament in South Shore last weekend.The Scorpions won three straight games in pool play and then edged the Nevada Lightning from Reno in the semifinals, 7-6, when Ashlirae Scott from Belmont cracked a two-run single in the sixth inning to drive in the game-winning run.
In a first-round playoff quarterfinal game, the Scorpions got a six-strikeout, two-hit performance from Baily Sutton from San Mateo for a 2-1 win over the Quakes from Fremont. Jennifer Ticzon from Foster City, who will attend Burlingame next fall, smashed a triple.
The Scorpions suffered their first loss in the tourney when they fell, 8-5, to the Delta Diamonds from Antioch in the championship game. Vanessa Smith from Aragon High cracked a double and Ticzon a triple for the Scorpions.
In pool play, the Scorpions opened with a 5-3 win over Dare 2 Believe from Concord. Sutton, who will be attending Hillsdale High next fall, pitched a four-hitter with four strikeouts. Lauren Henry from Notre Dame High drove in two, and Scott had two hits.
The Scorpions downed the Nevada Lightning 94 from Reno, 3-1, with Sutton slugging a solo homer. Starter Clair Hutar from Foster City and Sutton (two innings) combined on a four-hitter with four strikeouts. The Scorpions wound up pool play with a 3-0 mark when they edged the Nevada Lightning, 3-2, with Ticzon and Jessica Zarubin from Foster City each cracking doubles.
