Belmont's Lee fires a 78 at U.S. Open
Belmont golfer Joanne Lee shot a 5-over-par 78 Thursday in the first round of the U.S. Women's Open, leaving her 11 shots behind leaders Ji Young Oh and Pat Hurst. Lee is an amateur from Carlmont High School who will golf for Cal next season after beginning her collegiate career at USC.Lee shot 37 on the front nine and 41 on the back nine, putting her in a tie for 110th place on the par-73, 6,789-yard course at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn.
There were 33 golfers with higher scores than Lee, including Stanford student Michelle Wie, who butchered the ninth hole on her way to a quintuple-bogey 9 and shot 81.
