Local briefs: Orioles sweep split-team doubleheader
The San Mateo Orioles won both ends of an unusual split-team doubleheader Sunday in 19-and-under American Legion baseball action at Aragon High School in San Mateo. After beating Dublin 2-1, coach Mike Chanteloup's team knocked off Burlingame 7-3. Both games were seven-inning affairs.The Orioles outhit Dublin 8-4, including a pair of doubles by Pierson Jeremiah, and overcame a pair of errors in Game 1. Dublin was error-free. Nick Franquez had a pair of hits and Ryan Allgrove drove in both San Mateo runs in the win.
Bobby Hurst pitched four innings and earned the win. He struck out eight and walked three, allowing two hits and zero earned runs. Brandon Bielagus pitched three scoreless innings, giving up two hits while striking out four. He did not walk a batter.
San Mateo improved to 15-3-1, 1-1-1 in the league.
A five-run second inning was the difference in Game 2 as the Orioles outhit Burlingame 5-4 and neither team made an error. Danny Chavez got the win, setting Burlingame down in order in four innings. Chavez struck out five and walked two and did not allow a hit after the first inning. Mike Andrick took the loss.
Dominic Ferrando had a pair of hits for San Mateo, which got a double from Jeremiah.
Steven Riddle had a pair of RBIs for Burlingame.
San Mateo suffered a 9-3 setback against the Oakland Oaks on Saturday. The Orioles were outhit 9-8 and were hurt by four errors, three more than the visiting Oaks committed in the nine-inning game at Belmont Sports Complex.
Scotty Kalush relieved Brett Montague in the sixth inning and suffered the loss.
Allgrove and Ferrando each had two hits for the Orioles. Ferrando added a pair of RBIs.
St. Francis grad lifts Quakes
Goalie Joe Cannon, a St. Francis-Mountain View product, shut out the Chicago Fire on Saturday as the San Jose Earthquakes earned a point with a 0-0 tie.
Cannon turned back a point-blank shot from forward Tomasz Frankowski just 33 seconds into the game. Ten minutes later, a terrific bicycle kick by Chicago forward Andy Herron sailed right into Cannon's arms.
Cannon stopped a likely Chicago goal by midfielder Justin Mapp when he punched the ball up and away in the 71st minute. Cannon then dove to his left to turn back Chris Rolfe's try in the 76th minute.
"The crucial save was Joe (Cannon) on Chris Rolfe's (shot)," Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop said.
Fencers at nationals
The U.S. Fencing Championship began Tuesday and will run through July 10 at the San Jose Convention Center. The Coastside Academy of Fencing in Half Moon Bay is one of the Bay Area clubs with fencers participating. Coastside has six nationally ranked fencers with high hopes in San Jose.
Palo Alto all-stars top Mountain View
Cory Tenanes delivered five hits as his Palo Alto team belted Mountain View 11-2 Monday night in Game 1 of the Babe Ruth District 6 15-year-old All-Stars Tournament at Belmont Sports Complex.
Palo Alto outhit Mountain View 18-3 in a game that saw the teams combine for eight errors (five by Mountain View).
Kyle Barnes picked up the win. Daniel Orozco took the loss.
Danny Diekroeger had three hits and two RBIs for Palo Alto, including a double. T.J. Braff, Ryan Lockareff and Gabe Kaplan each had two hits. Jack Hannan produced three RBIs for Palo Alto, which got a pair of RBIs from Braff.
Old Pro's big donation to Little League
The Old Pro sports bar in Palo Alto will donate an entire day's proceeds - expected to be more than $10,000 - to help the Ravenswood Little League baseball program in East Palo Alto. The league was the victim in the theft of $8,500 worth of equipment and food supplies when a storage shed was broken into on Saturday. The Old Pro will give the money it takes in on July 11.
The Palo Alto Little League also is making a donation.
Rowing coach dies
Former Stanford rowing coach Lou Lindsey passed away in his sleep June 23 at age 87. Lindsey coached the U.S. men's eight from the U.S. Naval Academy to the Olympic gold medal at the 1960 Games in Rome. He served as Stanford's coach from 1954 to 1956. Despite being confined to a wheelchair in later years, Lindsey loyally attended Stanford races with his son, Paul, up until his passing.
Stanford among ESPN's best sports towns
Fans of Stanford athletics gathered Tuesday afternoon in Pac-10 Plaza on campus to take part in the taping of ESPN's "TitleTown USA" segment, which will focus on the successful history of Stanford's athletic program.
The segment, hosted by ESPN's George White and featuring women's basketball coach Tara VanDerveer, will air sometime later this month. ESPN has yet to announce its specific broadcast schedule of the 20 finalist cities in the network's contest to determine America's top sports city. A panel of judges narrowed down fan-generated nominations to 20 finalists, with the eventual top sports town to be decided by online fan voting and announced July 27.
Chastain will be signing autographs in Palo Alto
Fans can meet soccer star Brandi Chastain and get her autograph when she makes an appearance Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Private Gallery of the Medallion Rug, 353 University Ave., in Palo Alto. Chastain is helping kick off the 42nd International Children's Games set for July 10-15 in San Francisco.
More than 90 athletes ages 12 to 15 from the Bay Area have been selected to represent San Francisco at the games. The participants were chosen in qualifying tournaments and tryouts over three months and will join more than 1,200 others from 44 countries in eight sports.
